Access to Jessop Medical Practice

Access at Jessop Medical Practice

The diagram below shows how our access system works. Please be aware that other services are also available to help you with your query such as local pharmacy services. If your query is prescription related, you should contact the Medicines Order Line on 01246 588 860 or visit this page for more info. MOL (Medicines Order Line)

Please be aware that our access system works alongside our Long Term Conditions Birthday Review System.

Please note: Our Reception Team will request as much information as possible in relation to your query. They do not make clinical decisions with this information but pass it on to our clinical team. The more information we have about the problem the better we will be able ensure you get the care you need to address that problem. Our Reception Team have been trained and asked to do this by our GP Partners so an assessment on your requirements can be made.

Why has the Practice Chosen this system?

We moved to this system at the start of 2020. Our previous system led to patients often having to wait 4 or 5 weeks to speak with a clinician about routine issues, with many unable to get a convenient appointment due to scarcity of appointments or because they were at work when we opened each morning. With our current system, all patients receive a NEXT DAY RESPONSE from the practice, something we have not offered previously. Please also be assured that if you clinically require a face-to-face appointment – you will receive one.

This system has also helped us to reduce our DNA (Did Not Attend) rate due to patients booking weeks in advance and then not attending the surgery for various reasons including the issue resolving, causing the loss of precious clinician time.

Why Do We Prefer the Use of eConsult?

eConsult asks appropriate clinical questions that a clinician would ask when you input your condition/symptoms. If the clinician has this information in advance it saves them AND the patient time as they could have a pre-planned solution in mind. It also enables us to prioritise people with more urgent problems. Other advantages for the patient include not having to waste time queuing on our phone system and it also frees up the lines for those who are unable to complete eConsults. Remember you can also submit an eConsult via the NHS App!

We appreciate that eConsult is not always perfect for every situation, but the majority of feedback from patients is positive and eConsult has made their experience much quicker and easier. We know that sometimes it stops patients from completing the form, but this is for patient safety purposes and is regularly reviewed as eConsult is a nationally used system.

Please note as demonstrated in the diagram above that by using the phone lines instead of eConsult, you do not get assessed quicker and when the clinician contacts you back – they will have less information in advance.

We do recognise that not everyone can use eConsult, but the more people that do use it will help to reduce waiting times.

I want to use the Telephone, when is the best time to call?

As with many telephone services, we too have busy periods. Please be assured that we regularly review our staffing levels in relation to the number of incoming calls and we have a large reception team, working hard at all times. However, there are periods that are busier than others over the course of the week including all day Monday and early mornings for the rest of the week. So if your query is not urgent, please call during the quieter periods, you will much likely get through quicker.

Why is eConsult not available outside of core practice opening hours?

Jessop MP is not an out-of-hours service and other services such as 111 are in place for patients outside of our opening times. eConsult is available for the entirety of our core opening hours (8am – 6:30pm, Monday-Friday) unless there are extenuating circumstances such as abnormally high demand or staff sickness. The only other time the practice is closed is one afternoon per month for group staff training.

eConuslt is available from any computer or mobile device with internet access and can also be done via the NHS App. We have previously tested opening overnight and during the weekend and we found that patients would wait longer for us to resolve their issue rather than going to the appropriate services open at the time.

Why Can’t I Just Free Text/Type or e-mail in my Issue?

Because it’s too risky! Patients may not be able to provide the necessary information and may send unclear messages with no options to choose from – leaving clinical risk.
